J.C. FormyDuval, Jr. Memorial Scholarship named at SCC

Wednesday, December 16th, 2015

J.C. FormyDuval, Jr., was one of Columbus County’s finest educators. He was a teacher, a coach, a counselor and a mentor for many young students but his legacy is one of being an exemplary principal at Old Dock Elementary School for 36 years. He retired in 2001.
FormyDuval regrettably passed away in 2009. His death was a huge loss to the Old Dock community, his former students, his wife Jeanette Ward FormyDuval, his daughter Michelle FormyDuval Lynch and her two daughters Anna James and Elizabeth Lynch, and his immediate family.
Recognizing J.C.’s allegiance to Southeastern Community College and to education in general, Jeanette and Michelle, who is an attorney living in Wilmington, have named the J.C. FormyDuval, Jr. Memorial Scholarship at SCC. With their contribution of seed money, given at the October SCC Foundation Fund Drive Kickoff, the scholarship is intended to reach endowment status in the near future. Contributions from family, friends and former students will be accepted in order to build the fund.
“Michelle and I want J.C.’s legacy of service to education to live on in Columbus County,” said Jeanette FormyDuval. “We would like for the scholarship to be awarded to a student in the college transfer program at SCC with a preference for students studying education or history. Preference will be given to a former Old Dock Elementary student. There are many Old Dock students who attend SCC to further their education,” she concluded.
“I worked with J.C. for many years when I held the position of Recruitment Coordinator at SCC,” shared Executive Dean of Institutional Advancement, Sue Hawks. “His focus was concentrated on student success. Every year he would invite me and our current Miss SCC to Old Dock’s eighth grade banquet. The students were dressed in their finest for the occasion. We shared with the students the secret to opening the doors to higher education at SCC. It was always a highlight of his year and ours. I can’t think of any educator more deserving of a named scholarship than Mr. J.C.,” she concluded.
Contributions to the J.C. FormyDuval, Jr. Memorial Scholarship may be made by contacting the SCC Foundation at 642-7141, ext. 320 or 260, or by mail to: SCC Foundation, P.O. Box 151, Whiteville, NC 28472. Donations by MasterCard and Visa are also accepted through Paypal on the SCC Foundation webpage at www.sccnc.edu/community/give. If you would like to start a conversation about naming a scholarship, contact Sue Hawks at 642-7141, ext. 320 or sue.hawks@sccnc.edu.
