SCC hosting summer Allied Health camp

Friday, June 17th, 2016

This summer, rising ninth and tenth graders with an interest in pursuing a career in allied health are encouraged to apply for enrollment in Camp Disaster, a four and a half day camp offering hands-on opportunities in medical laboratory technology, pharmacy, phlebotomy, CPR and first-aid training at Southeastern Community College.

The camp will meet Monday, June 27, through Thursday, June 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday July 1, from 8:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a light breakfast and lunch to be provided daily.

The goal of this training is to develop an interest in health careers, foster this interest, and prepare the students to succeed when they enroll in a health career program, and subsequently work in an allied health career.

In addition to the topics listed above, campers will learn about various health care professions and how SCC can help them reach their goals with a career in allied health. They will use their new training in a mock disaster, in which emergency medical technicians, volunteers and faculty will artificially simulate a variety of injuries and will help students respond appropriately within the campers’ level of capability. They also will tour Columbus Regional Healthcare System and Columbus County Health Department.

Funding for Camp Disaster is provided by the South East Area Health Education Center (SEAHEC), which was created in 1973 and is one of nine Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) under the North Carolina statewide AHEC Program that was established to attract, retain, and maintain high quality health care professionals in all areas of the state. SEAHEC is administered by the Health Sciences Foundation, Inc., an educational non-profit organization governed by a board of directors.
