SCC Celebrates Manufacturing Day Virtually
Monday, September 28th, 2020
Southeastern Community College is taking part in Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) on Friday, October 2 virtually.
MFG Day empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive. SCC is excited to bring this celebration to Columbus County.
Manufacturing Day events are organized by The Manufacturing Institute (MI). MFG Day and the month-long celebration of the industry it kicks off will be different this year now that we can’t tour local factories in person. But SCC is celebrating with a week-long virtual celebration that will wrap up on Friday, October 2 with our Career Coach, Tom Provost.
“The importance of Manufacturing Day is to educate the public at large on the importance of the role manufacturers play in our daily lives,” explains Tom Provost, “To inspire the next generation of workers to gain the skills required to fill the growing manufacturing-related job openings in Columbus County, in NC and across the US.”
Learn how you can get involved with MFG Day here.
“As you celebrate Manufacturing this week and the coming month of October, we hope students recognize the advantages of careers in Mechatronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, and other transfer degree opportunities,” says Dr. Chris English, President.
Students will learn about our programs with the option of taking a personal tour of the new Advanced Manufacturing Training Center.
Although MFG Day is targeted towards high school students, any age group is welcome to tour the new Advanced Manufacturing Training Center and learn more about our programs.

Students and others can continue to celebrate manufacturing awareness throughout the month of October through MI. The MI will host several events including:
- Friday, Oct. 2, at 12:00 p.m. EDT, there’s a program for America’s students headlined by The Space Gal, Emily Dawn Calandrelli, host and co-executive producer of Netflix’s Emily’s Wonder Lab and FOX’s Xploration Outer Space. It’s designed to get students excited about opportunities in the manufacturing industry. The program is presented by Salesforce, PTC, and Rockwell Automation, and you can find more information here.
- Monday, Oct. 5, at 12:00 p.m. EDT, there’s a program to help teachers learn more about what’s possible for their students in a modern manufacturing career. The program is headlined by Allen Gannett, technology entrepreneur and author of “The Creative Curve,” and presented by PTC. You can find more information and register for the event here.
The MI will be announcing more events in the coming weeks, including an event for parents presented by Walmart – highlighting the impact of manufacturers during the COVID-19 pandemic and featuring an interview by legendary broadcaster Elvis Duran.
“MFG Day has always been a grassroots movement led by innovative manufacturers. In the face of this year’s challenges, we’re responding by creating opportunities to reach more students, parents, and educators,” said MI Executive Director Carolyn Lee. “We are really excited about our opportunity to extend MFG Day with digital programming into more homes and communities, including underrepresented communities, and improve the perception of modern manufacturing careers more broadly.”
