SCC celebrates the arts for N.C. Archives Month

Tuesday, October 20th, 2015

The Williamson Library at Southeastern Community College will host an event commemorating 2015 North Carolina Archives month on Tuesday, October 27 at 11:00 a.m. The theme, “Celebrating Archives: North Carolina Arts, Crafts and Music Traditions,” will bring together creativity from all over Columbus County.

The morning promises to have something for all. Woodturner Dewey Ward, whose intricate, carved vessels have gained wide recognition in recent months, will be the keynote speaker. A musical performance by Pamela Young-Jacobs, member of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe, will highlight the rich Native American influence rooted in North Carolina’s artistic heritage. Local artist Karen L. Gore will also be on hand to tell the story behind her well-known work “The Keeper of the Flag” featured in Our State magazine. Her handmade dolls made of linen, cashmere and other fine textiles will also be on display.

Emerging artists from the SCC art department will have their work presented in an exhibition on site.  Several student pieces will be selected to receive cash prizes. Young guitarist Jessica Davidson of Whiteville will also perform contemporary acoustic sounds for the audience.

Guests will enjoy free hand massages by the college’s cosmetology students, as well as refreshments. Attendees may also enter to win many valuable prizes including a limited, signed and numbered edition of Karen L. Gore’s “The Keeper of the Flag.”

This event is free to the public. The Williamson Library at Southeastern Community College is located at 4564 Chadbourn Hwy in Whiteville.  For more information, contact the SCC library Archives department at 910-642-7141 ext. 266.
