SCC Launches First Construction Academy

Thursday, December 2nd, 2021

After high interest with construction trade classes that led to construction on a Tiny House, Southeastern Community College is enrolling for the first Construction Academy.

The Construction Academy is perfect for students interested in gaining the skills needed to join the workforce, start their own business, or for individuals looking for personal enrichment classes.

The Construction Academy will be led by our new full-time instructor, Chris Cook. Cook graduated from NC State University in Civil Engineering and has over 40 years of experience in the industry.

The goal is to prepare students with technical, academic, and employability skills necessary to pursue a career in the construction industry. Students interested in problem-solving, working with your hands, or you’re ready to make your hobby a thriving career, should consider a career in the skilled trades industry.

The Construction Academy utilizes a hands-on approach to learning that requires students to apply skills in math, communication, technology, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Learning Overview

Students will have the opportunity to learn basic construction skills in: carpentry, electrical, and 2 certifications in OSHA 30 and Forklift Operations.

At the end of the semester, eligible students will have the opportunity to train first-hand with industries in Columbus County that are looking for skilled workers. Students will also understand the basics like reading a tape measure, reading blueprints, and identifying the different types of hand tools and saws.

At the end of the course, students will have been introduced to construction methods associated with the building industry including framing, materials, tools, and equipment. Topics include site preparation, measurement and layout, footings and foundations, construction framing, electrical wiring, and other related topics.

On November 9, 2021, SCC held an Advisory Meeting which was a huge success. “It’s extremely necessary and rewarding to hear from our incredible industry leaders in Columbus County,” said Dean Angie Ransom. “We built this program based on feedback we received from that meeting and other community colleges in the System. We are determined to meet the needs of our community and provide opportunities in Construction trades at the college.”

Eligible students can enroll in the Construction Academy for FREE through the scholarships and grants which will cover tuition, books, and fees. To secure funding, students should register early. Scholarships are awarded so long as funding is available.

Enrollment is open for the Spring semester. Classes begin on January 31.

Interested students should call (910) 788-6350 to learn more or to pre-register.
