SCC Partners with High Schools for Summer Construction Camp

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2022

Southeastern Community College and Columbus County Schools are excited to partner together to provide a FREE Construction Summer Camp for high school students.

This is a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on, industry skills in carpentry, blueprint-reading, electrical, and HVACR. The camp will also include guest speakers from construction businesses, and it will allow students to explore the many opportunities to enter the workforce in the construction industry.

The cost to attend the camp is FREE.

Date: June 13 – July 27
Days: Monday – Thursday
Time: 8 am – 5 pm

Columbus County Schools (CCS) will be providing transportation and meals for students who attend CCS high schools thanks to a special federal grant that was awarded to Columbus County Schools. The grant is designed to boost interest and participation in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, expose more students to the world of CTE, build learning opportunities, and expand opportunities to earn workplace credentials. Partnering together allows CCS and SCC to begin building a pipeline of employees for the construction industry.

After successful completion of this camp, students will not only receive high school class credit, but they will also earn college credits toward an Introduction to Facilities Maintenance Certificate.

Graduating seniors who attend SCC may be eligible for paid work-based learning opportunities in Fall 2022.

“We are excited about our partnership with SCC in fulfilling this opportunity for all students at Columbus County Schools,” said Director of Federal Programs and Career and Technical Education, Tom McLam. “There are needs in our local workforce that can benefit from programs like this, and we look forward to continuing partnerships with SCC to make these possibilities become realities.”

The deadline to enroll is May 31.

Interested students can register early with Natalie Freeman, SCC Advisor, at (910) 788-6285 or call to learn more about this amazing opportunity.
