SCC Receives $206,593 from GEER Fund to Award Scholarships

Friday, January 22nd, 2021

Southeastern Community College recently received $206,593 from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund to expand educational opportunities and workforce development programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the GEER Fund, the U.S. Department of Education awards grants to governors for the purpose of providing local educational agencies, institutions of higher education, and other education-related entities with emergency assistance for issues resulting from COVID-19.

SCC will use these funds for scholarships to eligible community college students pursuing high-demand workforce training programs within workforce pathways leading to a State or industry-recognized credential. The scholarships will help cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, credentialing tests, transportation, childcare, and other components of the total cost of attendance.

“This is a great opportunity for students to gain the skills they need to advance their careers. Eligible students could potentially receive a FULL scholarship in short-term training programs,” said President Chris English.

Students interested in the areas listed below may apply for these scholarships:

Construction: Welding, HVAC, Electrical, Masonry, Carpentry
Emergency Medical Services: EMT Initial, Advanced EMT Initial, Paramedic Initial
Healthcare: Nurse Aid I, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Office Assistant
Industrial/Manufacturing: Manufacturing Technician, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining

There is still time to register for late-start Spring semester classes. You can register with Student Services at (910) 788-6358.

Scholarships available so long as funds are available. Contact Columbus County NCWorks Career Center at (910) 788-6261 or ashlee.smith@sccnc.edu for more information to apply.
