SECU Foundation awards $5,000 to SCC Students

Tuesday, August 25th, 2020

The State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) members, through the member-funded SECU Foundation, awarded $5,000 scholarships each to SCC students Leah Sanderson and Marly Gore.

SECU Foundation established the two-year scholarship program in 2004 to help North Carolina students achieve academic success through the community college system. Based on the Credit Union philosophy of “People Helping People,” these scholarships recognize Sanderson and Gore’s leadership, character and integrity, community involvement, and scholastic achievement.

Sanderson and Gore both graduated from Whiteville High School. They started their college journey through Career & College Promise, a program that allows high school students to earn college credit. Sanderson is enrolled in the Associate of Science program and is interested in studying dentistry. Gore is in the Associate of Arts program and plans to transfer to a 4-year university to further her education in business administration.

SECU Foundation Executive Director Jama Campbell comments, “The impact of SECU Foundation’s scholarship program has been tremendous for thousands of North Carolina students and their families, helping ease the financial burden of college expenses as they further their education through our state’s outstanding community college system. We are pleased to continue our strong commitment to education and to making a difference in the lives of these students. On behalf of SECU Foundation, we offer our congratulations and best wishes to Marly Gore and Leah Sanderson.”

Annually, SECU members provide two $5,000 “People Helping People” Scholarships to each of the 58 community colleges in North Carolina through the SECU Foundation scholarship program. To date, over $9 million has been awarded to help the State’s community college students further their education.
