Shaw is new SCC trustee

Tuesday, December 12th, 2017

Emma Shaw was recently sworn in as a newly appointed trustee at Southeastern Community College. Shaw is a Governor’s appointee and her term will run through June 30, 2021.

“This is an honor for me to serve in this capacity and this honor is one that I do not take lightly,” Shaw said. “As long as I can remember, there has always been a SCC. I am proud of the history and strides this college has made over decades… in my lifetime. I want to be an active member and truly engage in what is happening on the college campus. I want to make a difference in the decision-making of what is best for the survival of this college and I look forward to working with a group of trustees that will advocate for the college and do what is needed for it to continuously thrive.”

Shaw is a member of the Columbus County Association of Educators, the North Carolina Association of Educators and the National Association of Educators for 32 years. She is a strong advocate for education from early childhood education to college. She has worked with two higher educational programs, The Teacher Cadet Program and FTA (Future Teachers of America). These programs encouraged students in the middle grades, high school and college to consider pursuing degrees in education. She also worked with the Teaching Fellows Scholarship Program for many years, awarding four-year scholarships to deserving students from our region. The CCAE (Columbus County Association of Educators) has helped a deserving student at SCC with a scholarship and while serving on the Teacher Advisory Committee for Governor Beverly Perdue, she worked to advocate programs to prepare children as young as kindergarten to consider college in their future.
Shaw is the founder of the Bogue Community Citizens Association (BCCA), a non-profit charitable community organization offering afterschool tutoring, meals on wheels, a monthly food bank, family health fairs and other programs that foster volunteerism and provide a bridge of support for youth and senior citizens.

Shaw has been employed with Columbus County Schools for 32 years and is currently a kindergarten teacher at Hallsboro-Artesia Elementary School. She holds a BA in Elementary Education from Shaw University and received her National Board Certification in 2006.

“We are excited to welcome Mrs. Shaw to the SCC Board of Trustees and look forward to the contributions she will make using her wealth of knowledge about education in Columbus County,” said SCC Board of Trustees Chairman Henry Edmund.

Shaw is the daughter of George Washington McLaurin and Sarah Mae McLaurin of Hallsboro. She is married to Macie Shaw and they have three daughters, Beverly, Jamilia and Ashley, and two grandchildren, Marley and William. Shaw is from Hallsboro but has lived in Riegelwood for 25 years.
